its getting better all the time...

Well two months later I think it's time to update...

First things first obviously... new season of The Office!! woo!
The first episode was a solid start for sure...

The weather is amazing... Fall is definitely my favorite season. Sweatpants, hoodies and football... mmm. Speaking of football, the Pats are tearing it up of course. The whole cheating thing was b.s... every team in the league does it... they just happened to get caught lol. I'm looking forward to their games against Dallas and Indy... and my new favorite player is Welker. Okay enough about that.

Work is going well... our acuity has been higher these past few weeks. Lots of vents and respiratory issues... I guess it's that time of year again. Job security : )

Brett and I looked at rings a couple times and I finally made up my mind. I picked the band but he's choosing the solitaire so there will still be some surprises... I love it though. Seriously Bowen's is the only place in Lynchburg that I ever want to buy jewelry from again.

I think we're starting to narrow a few things down... we're thinking maybe early August for the wedding. That gives us all summer to find new jobs, housing, etc. and it also gives me some more time to plan. And I'm thinking Maryland for the ceremony... I have some fun ideas but I need to figure out how much those fun ideas will cost! I think Brett is going to focus his job search in the MD/PA area... not exactly sure where though. The next year or so is gonna be busy and crazy and amazing... and there is no one I'd rather go on that journey with than my sweetie. Cliche but seriously true : )

It's been awesome to have everyone back for school... I basically got to have an extra year of college without the school/homework nonsense. Good times...

Ohhh Brett and I went to the Song of Solomon conference at school last weekend with some friends. Hands down one of the best speakers and relationship talks I've ever heard... we had so much fun.

Bedtime yes? Yes.

just.breathe.

I'm having a hard time breathing tonight... and ironically I'm feeling very grateful about that. Over the past few years, worry-free breathing has been the exception rather than the norm. Summer always seems to be the worst season for me with 2005 and 2006 taking the grand prize for oxygen depravity. This year, on the other hand, has been absolutely incredible. I still have to use my inhaler fairly often... but the attacks are fewer and farther between and the typical severity of each episode is much less than I'm used to. Tonight is really the first time in weeks I've had any legitimate difficulty... and I know exactly what caused it. Last night's combination of bonfire, bugspray, citronella, dusty couches and the great outdoors was begging for trouble... but you only live once, right? Anyways... having trouble tonight makes me wholeheartedly appreciate the improvement I've seen in the past year. It's an incredible feeling of relief... maybe I'm growing out of it? : )

It's been a fun weekend so far... the house lost its bonfire virginity last night. And then we decided to stay up all night so that we could go yardsaling early this morning. It turned out to be a pretty profitable adventure... the guys got some great speakers, two camping chairs, a couch, pillows, two indoor chairs, 3 end tables and a coffee table for the house. The weather was amazing today... 85 degrees instead of 100. I finally got a long-overdue pedicure... and then crashed for a 5 hour nap. It's been really good to have everyone back in town this week...

Campus church in the morning... then Brett and I are going to dinner at Kristie & Jen's tomorrow night.

Next weekend is my motorcycle safety class... Susie-Q has a rule about us taking the course before we're allowed to ride our bikes. So this time next week I should be licensed and official... just in time for perfect riding weather.

Tonight my sleep-deprived boyfriend drove all the way across town just because he missed me and wanted to give me a hug before bed. I think he's a keeper, yes? : )

so long sweet summer...

I worked last night. And the night before. And the five million before that. Anyways I can't go to bed yet because I have a MD appt at 10:40... thats right in the middle of my usual sleep time so I decided to stay awake.

Did I mention I'm working an insane amount of hours right now? It's kind of ridiculous... but I'm hoping that payday will help ease the pain. Last night was busy. And the night before . And the five million before that.

Brett comes back on Monday!! This entire summer has seriously flown by... we've both been so busy working (and visiting each other!) that the time has passed really quickly. It will be so good to have him back though... hopefully this 3 month live-in-separate-states nonsense is over forever.

My Lasik'd eyes are amazing. 20/15 in both eyes for distance and near vision... can't get much better than that.

My hair is getting really long.

I wish I had something exciting to say but all I do is work.

Aaand I'm out.

busy busy.

So far I'm not a very good blogger. Life has seriously been insane...

I went to visit Brett for a week which is always amazing. We spent the first few days with his family in New Hampshire at the chalet... drove to Freeport, Maine for a day (the L.L. Bean store alone is worth the trip)... and then spent the rest of the week in Duxbury working on the Mustang, shopping, etc. Oh and eating. I might have to move north just for the food. Every time I go to visit I have an agenda of the restaurants I need to tackle during the week. UNO's is part of my new Top 5... yum. One thing they don't have is Chick-fil-A... but I guess living within one hour of Macaroni Grill could compensate.

I had Lasik done on my eyes yesterday... it went pretty well. I'm feeling a lot better today... and I can see! I'm already 20/20 in one eye and 20/15 in the other... and that should only get better with time. Plus I got a sweet pair of safety goggles, so I'd say the whole thing was a success.

Back to work tomorrow... story of my life. I'm working 36 extra hours on this two week pay period so that should be a pretty official paycheck. Brett comes back to school on the 13th so I figured I may as well cram in a little extra between now and then. I really do love my job. I always wish that people could follow me around for a night to see what intensive care nursing is actually all about. The most common thing I hear when someone finds out I'm a nurse is "Oh I could never deal with someone throwing up!"... or "Do you have to give people shots?!". Shots and puke are seriously the least of my worries : ) My other favorite is... "Oh you work night shift? You don't really have to do much work during the nighttime, right?" Riiight.

True... there are nights that I have really stable patients who are just waiting for a bed on a regular floor. There are also nights where people are dying... and I get to be a part of the process that keeps them alive. And then there are nights where dying is inevitable... and I have the privilege to sit with patients and their families to help them through that process.

Not every night is that inspirational... I also run into a lot of whackjobs who keep things interesting. Seriously I meet some of the strangest people... Sometimes they make you laugh and sometimes you want to hit them. One time I had a nurse tell me that "In the morning you get to go home... they don't." I always think about that now when my patience is wearing down... These people are dealing with really tough life situations on a daily basis... the least I can do is stick it out for 12 hours and try to impact them in a positive way during our time together.

It's not all hard and sad... I've met some incredible people that I will never forget. They make me laugh... they make me cry... they teach me new things... and they remind me why I decided to do this job in the first place.

On that note... I work 8 out of the next 10 days. I might not be feeling so dedicated after that : )

I'm excited for everyone to come back to Lynchburg! Things can get a little lonely around here during the summer. This is the first year that almost everyone is off campus so that should be a good time....

Hey if you have a second you should check out http://www.babyleino.blogspot.com/
It's about my friend's nephew... he could really use your prayers.

Until next time...

blogging?

So... I work third shift. It's actually really great for the most part. Unfortunately it means that my prime hours of wakefulness are between about 10 pm and 5 am when the rest of the world is sleeping. I usually find something to keep myself busy but some nights I'm completely bored... maybe blogging will be a semi-productive use of my time.

We'll see how it goes.
